CUE is pleased to present a solo exhibition by New York-based artist Wopo Holup, generously curated by the artist Yvonne Jacquette.

Holup’s River Drawings depict subtly altered aerial landscapes, rendered in metal leaf and pencil. The artist uses satellite imagery as her guide, re-drawing the meandering paths onto vellum by hand. Through this transcription, Holup articulates something that is determined by a natural logic and captured by manmade technology, highlighting the dissonance between the natural world and the way in which we are able to see it. Abstracted by the absence of all other geography and lack of adherence to their cardinal orientation, these drawings are not cartographic, though remain honest about the aesthetic allure of a naturally occurring form, and still deeply rooted in place.

Holup has been commissioned for more than two-dozen public art projects across the country, and her bronze and iron works are on permanent display at the Philadelphia Zoo, Historic Battery Park in Manhattan, and the Tampa International Airport, among many others. Her drawings were recently included in a traveling exhibition organized by The Center for Creativity and Design at the University of North Carolina. This is her first solo exhibition in New York City in over twenty years.

ALSO ON VIEW: THE SPACE PROGRAM | PROJECT SPACE: PAM BUTLER Artist-in-residence Pam Butler will present I’m Just a Normal Kid – two large works on paper developed from remnants of her installation Sex, Death & Boys (Atlantic Center for the Arts, July 2012). Butler employs a range of images from simplistic, hand-drawn female figures to found photographs of suicide bombers and pictures of teen heartthrobs. Butler’s well-known mid-90s street art poster project Good Girl Project is now archived at the Fales Library at NYU, and her work has been exhibited internationally, including White Columns’ White Room, PS 122, Momenta Art, and Art in General, among others.

In 2012, CUE established a partnership with the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation to co-manage The Space Program in DUMBO, the largest free-of-charge studio program in New York City.
