New Works, a show of recent paintings by artist James Lipovac is currently on view at 114 West 47th Street (between 6th and 7th Avenue) in New York City. Displayed are 7 paintings containing destroyed passages of figuration, balanced by areas of flat, clean color. Lipovac focuses on the tactile material that underlies figurative painting to the point that fragments appear collaged, while the illusionistic depth is distorted, and the character of an overall flat surface expands through a series of sharp juxtapositions and conflicting perspectives.

James Lipovac is a painter from Des Moines, Iowa who is currently based in Brooklyn. He has a studio in Sunset Park’s Army Terminal through chashama.

James attended the Maryland Institute College of Art for undergraduate studies in painting. and went on to receive his MFA from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

Recently his work was on view at the Scope Art Fair in Manhattan. He has also had solo exhibitions at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts (2009) and the Louis L. Redding City County Building in Wilmington, Delaware(2010). James Lipovac’s work is featured in the collections of the Sprint/Nextel Corporation, Vice President and Mrs. Joseph Biden, esq., the Delaware College of Art and Design and The Conservation Fund in Dover, Delaware.
