Klemens Gasser & Tanja Grunert welcome you to its first exhibition of paintings by the extraordinary Joa Baldinger. Joa, who has already been acknowledged for her mastery and direction with color, now treats her audience to something much more exciting and personal. As American literary theorist, Leo Bersani, has said, Joa does not project herself into the subject of her paintings, but instead, “finds herself already in the world”. Whether she depicts a person, a flower, or even something inanimate, Joa uses her paintings to express her own unique and immediate relationship to the world she sees. Her work is intuitive, rather than programmed; it is her singular and subjective experience that she captures. Joa herself has called the essence of her art: “the ecstatic feeling of seeing it, of being it. Being that woman, that man, that flower, that wall, floor, mountain, the air.”
Joa uses watercolor, oil on copper panel, and oil on large canvas to create pieces whose bold color choices and design emphasize the nature of her subject. Her style ranges from abstract and linear, to light emitting atmostpheric works showing people and objects as wildly bright interpretations of themselves. But as the NY Sun reported, in a highly flattering review, it is not merely Joa’s images that make her work astounding, but that, “the painting recalls the excitement of seeing moving pictures. It is as if an isolated frame of film has been stretched open to reveal hidden, inner secrets of color and form.” Indeed, Joa has cited her love of classic 60’s and 70’s films as one of her major influences, and the reference can be clearly seen as she makes each and every one of her subjects look both abstract and uniquely alive.
Klemens Gasser & Tanja Grunert Gallery proudly invites you to the opening of this incredible exhibit on October 18th, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., located at 524 W 19th St, New York, NY. The show will run through November 30th.
