Katsura Okada “APETALOUS: New Paintings of Flowers having No Petals”

“APETALOUS” means “flowers having no petals”, her new paintings shows nature designing abstraction and organic forms, and her works are focusing on Pistils and Stamens. Okada says “After March 11, 2011 that Tohoku disaster in Japan, I remembered that my childhood of artistic activities in Japan. Since I was 4 years old I loved painting very much those especially wild flowers such realism paintings or like a plant encyclopedia.”

Okada moved to New York from Tokyo, Japan in 2002, she lived and works in New York City. The artist utilizing powdered Mica and golden pigments, natural liquid adhesive on handmade rice paper and she is painting countless golden tiny dots and lines by brush. She explained her new paintings “I found such unique and beautiful forms from flowers without petals. And I feel that something strong and storing life from such organic shapes that center of flowers as the cores.”

Her new paintings are beautiful golden works infused with both concrete and abstract significance, and various fascinating shapes. Also she invites her viewers to take what they will from her work.

Katsura Okasda was born in Tokyo, Japan and has lived and worked in New York since 2002. Okada attended Sohkei College of Fine Arts and earned a Master of Japanese Calligraphy Arts from the Tokyo Academy of Calligraphy Arts in 1992. Since 1990, her work has been shown in numerous international and solo exhibitions in Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Hungary, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Slovakia, Japan, Canada, Mexico and the United States. Recently Okada’s work has been exhibited at such venues as A.I.R. Gallery in NYC, Black and White Gallery in Brooklyn, Marymount Manhattan College Hewitt Gallery of Art and the Museum of Arts & Crafts-Itami and Imai Art Museum in Japan. Okada has received first prize/grants from the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, the Shoto Art Museum in Tokyo and the SoHo Art Competition in New York among others.
