Gallery 151 & Keyes Art Consulting presents “Voodoo Alters Zombies and Oil Cans” from November 1st to December 8th, 2012. NY-based Keyes Art Consulting will present artwork at Gallery 151 from Haiti in a show titled “Voodoo Alters Zombies and Oil Cans” for Carnegie Hall’s Voices from Latin America Festival.

Curated by Julie Keyes, “Voodoo Alters Zombies and Oil Cans” features a selection of art from the collection of Mary Jo McConnell and new photography from Jill Peters. Scholar and art historian Mary Jo McConnell has selected representative pieces of narrative art from her extensive collection of Haitian works to exhibit with Keyes Art Projects at Gallery 151. The vibrant paintings will be juxtaposed with photography by Jill Peters that illuminates the life of Haitian refugees in Florida.

A benefit for Una Escuelita, which aids school children in Nicaragua, will be on November 6 at 6 PM. Una Escuelita (A Little School) is an after-school program for the children of Limon Dos, an impoverished township in southwestern Nicaragua. Una Escuelita is a place of nurturing values, learning, and art, led by a staff of experienced Nicaraguan teachers and volunteers from around the world who create programs to challenge and engage children. Their goal is to create good citizens in a place where the resources of the educational system are scarce. Una Escuelita offers all children in the community a place to learn, play and receive a nourishing meal.
