Heliopolis Project Space in Greenpoint is pleased to present Goldilocks, Foxface, and Other Friends of Witchwood a solo exhibition of round miniature paintings by Allison Merz, an artist living and working in NYC. The collection of Merz’s paintings shown here comprises a series of iconic portraits of women in nature, endowed with fantastical elements and imbued with a deep and distant spirituality. This is both a departure and a continuation for Merz, who received her MFA in Painting from Brooklyn College in 2011. While her earlier work carries the same emotional resonance, it is much larger, often monumental in scale, allowing for landscape and narrative to play a role. The newer, smaller works in Goldilocks… have been refined and condensed, and portray their subjects with a level of detail that feels almost devotional.
Andy Wolf, who has helped curate other shows at Heliopolis, has organized the exhibition, which runs from Saturday, December 8th to Sunday, December 30th at Heliopolis, 154 Huron Street, Brooklyn, NY. The opening reception will be on the evening of December 8th from 8-11PM. The gallery is open weekends from 1-6PM, and by appointment only.
