Highly charged, tightly coiled lines unfurl across Mark Sheinkman’s smoky, grisaille canvasses. After applying his signature graphite, oil and alkyd mixture to the surfaces of his paintings, the artist creates sharp and blurred tangles of erased or smeared contour, heightening the sense of a penetrable, illusionistic space. Time is evident in these works as the eye wanders in and through the intersections of luminous strands.
Sheinkman’s works on canvas and paper appear in numerous public and private collections across the United States and Europe, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
