Strange Liberty will include videos, photography, photograms, and sculptural objects that are embodiments of photographic imagery. Materiality, immateriality, the actual and the ephemeral continuously inform the exhibition. The overall atmosphere is one of a meditative yet charged quietude, a space in which both the artist and the world she observes are active performers. In a series of photograms entitled Hair, Jennings creates oblique portraits of women ranging in age from 10 years to 72 years of age; each of the subjects was invited to spread her hair over photographic paper in a darkroom. The resulting images resemble hair being swirled by the sea, but light rather than water is the medium in which they exist. Chandelier, a video being presented for the first time, is another example of the pervasive role of light in the artist’s production. The out-of-focus painterly image is an extremely slow motion danceof color and shapes involving the physics of light.
