The large-scale abstract canvases show us “universes and multiverses” drawn from the simplest of lines to deeply complex glazed layers that seem to simultaneously reach into an inner dimension and out into our field of vision. The smaller-scale monoprints can be seen as phrases or gestures that express the key moments and elements that make up the language of the epic paintings. Both concepts, the universal and the intimate, are key to delving into this artists work- which stands on its own through its formal beauty, yet draws us in the more we look into Kleeman’s working process. Kleeman experiences the work of painting as an extemporaneous act and refers to the paintings as “alive.” For him, painting is both doing and relating- but is foremost a process of discovering and uncovering the hidden structures in the visual plane. In this sense, the artist does not compose or edit the work, but uncovers its true form through exploration and discovery.

This way of working is informed both by the psychotheraputic process of “working through,” an examination of the layers of thought- forms that makeup our personalities, and also through Kleeman’s career as a composer and improvisational musician under the moniker Lillianthal.
