Christy Bush’s photographs document contemporary teenage music fans attending rock concerts (Interpol, The Others, Elefant and The Secret Machines) in various cities across the United States, Europe and Australia.

The subjects of Bush’s photographs, shot extemporaneously in diverse concert-venue locations - lobbies, lavatories, backstage, in the audience - are decidedly unabashed and devoid of self-consciousness.

While the photographs were taken during the last two years, they possess the stark austerity and grace reminiscent of the French New Wave movies of the early 1960s. The photographs, both alone and in series could be stills from the making of a coming-of-age movie. Titillated by this evocation, the photographer generated an imaginary story-line linking the protagonists of her project and assigning them fictitious stage names. Some of the teen fans whom Bush encountered appear only once in her photographs. Others photographed at a number of different shows assume starring roles.

Bush captures the spirit of these teenage music fans and her photographs evidence the gamut of raw teen fan emotion – giddiness, vulnerability, boredom, innocence, fragile sophistication, longing. The viewer is invited to share their fleeting candor.

The audio track playing in conjunction with Soundtrack to Nothing comprises a number of songs written for the exhibit by The Last Night (Sam Fog of Interpol and Dagon James, in collaboration with guest musicians Adam Franklin of Toshack Highway and Swervedriver, Grasshopper of Mercury Rev, and Michael Stipe).
