Grand Union encompasses over a hundred artists and consists of more than fifty diptychs in a play on the traditional oblong husband and wife portrait set. To create Grand Union Isip and Stevens provided each of the participating artists with a standard 5”x 7” oval-shaped masonite panel and the freedom to do whatever they wished with it, as long as the finished panel could be hung vertically on a wall. The pieces were then sorted and paired according to their style, material, and/or content. The resulting fifty or so “couples” installed in the gallery is a pageant of diptychs, creating an effect not unlike that of a portrait salon featuring traditional husband-and-wife side-by-side portraits. What defines this series of “portraits” is not their marital connection but an aesthetic or conceptual correlation. The relationship born of this arrangement is a dynamic, provocative interplay between works that may have otherwise never met.
