In her second solo exhibition at I-20 gallery, painter Sherry Wong expands on the narrative themes developed for her solo debut of December 2003. Formerly Wong depicted herself as a mythological figure absorbing the mysticism of her Islamic heritage and communing with allegorical animals and fantastic landscapes. In her current show, she further unveils her unique universe to examine the souls and visages of close friends at the crux of decisions and crises.

Wong transforms her circle of friends into a constellation of archetypes whose passions and personas can be searing or pitch perfect. Working with traditional wood panels and a new palette of acrylic layers, Wong turns the new I-20 space into a modern sanctuary for secular but spirit-seeking icons. These are youth who want to get right with each other and with themselves, a spirit and a time that Wong has captured in this intimate show.

Sherry Wong was born in 1978, and raised in Turkey and England. She received a BA in Studio Arts at Smith College, and lives and works in Brooklyn.
