Originally trained as a painter, and than working as a collage artist, it was not until eight or nine years ago that Marc Yankus began incorporating his own photographs into his artwork. However, when he did so, it marked a turning point in his career.

Technically speaking, the transition from collage to Photoshop is not such a huge leap, especially for someone such as Yankus who began working on Macintosh computers in the early 1990s. And indeed, it is Yankus’ technique, which is so fascinating. In an image such as “City” for example (pictured at right), the artist first shot a soft-focus digital photograph of Chelsea. Then, scanning a blank page from a 19th -century book, Yankus layered the paper’s texture over his original image. This superimposition of the old and new serves as an apt metaphor for the artist’s wider conceptual interests as reflected in the title of the exhibition, Time and Again. Throughout this body of work, the artist oscillates not only between the old and the new, the past and the present, but also between figuration and landscape. Establishing a rhythm and play between timeless portraits and beautifully still and quiet landscapes and cityscapes, Yankus’ achievement is a wonderful consistency of mood. Hushed, introspective, and at turn even melancholic, this body of work is ultimately a reflection of the artist’s personal past and his passage into the present time.
