A photography show featuring works by Tema Stauffer, Type A, Amy Stein, Caitlin Atkinson, Ofer Wolberger, Alison Brady, Alexis Scherl and more.
Strange Instrument is a compilation of mostly high-contrast color photographs featuring a variety of lighting techniques. From natural light, to hyper-planned, or club lighting, an effect of ambience is created.
Amy Stein uses taxidermy to stage human/animal interaction. These encounters are derived from sensational accounts in newspapers and oral histories local to a small town in Pennsylvania. In The Trasheaters, Stein utilizes spotlights to expose the lupine offenders. In Tema Stauffer’s work it is the ephemeral lighting that magically mystifies forgotten corners at rest stops and gas stations.
Humor and oddity is also a large part of Strange Instrument. In Alexis Scherl’s work, this exists in photo-journalistic snaps of counterculture party life. Type A’s Spittakes resembles the frames of a comic strip and depicts the chronology of error – drinking milk while laughing.
The artists in the show range from recent art school graduates to established artists.
