In what is to be the gallery’s season finale, we will venture into the overgrown landscapes of our minds and neighborhoods, where the above definitions cryptically prevail in horror and in glory.
We have messed up our environment and our environment has messed up us. We melt polar ice caps and commute for hours of gridlock to put in time in a cubical. We keep dolphins in swimming pools and create laws to fine us for trespassing. We train bears to dance, we weed our gardens, deny visas, punish jaywalking, experiment with drugs, use SPF fortified foundation to look tan, and watch The Discovery Channel. Our terrain is navigated with so much confusion and contradiction, differentiating between the “natural” and “unnatural” world is a jungle in itself. Welcome to the Jungle is a safe and organized group tour of the land we tread on, a soil sample of unnatural observations, clutter, beauty, isolation, and claustrophobia. The artists make a clearing in the thicket of it all, where creatures of creative expression roam free and exposed to the elements.
Expect psychedelic photographs, brazen street art, allegorical nature scenes, dreamy cityscapes, and discordant figures in motion.
Exhibiting artists are: Peter Calvin, J. Mikal Davis, Shaun Kessler, and Ryan McLennan. Performance by Danielle Charboneau and Sarah Eaves.
Curated by Sophie Landre.
There will be a performance at 8:30 the night of the opening.
