The artists featured in this show have changed art discourse, and additionally have suffered arrest, admonishments and sanctions from funding and other powerful sources, attacks in the press, and even death threats. Still, they sally forth doing their work whatever the cost.
Works selected for the exhibition include original prints by Argentine graffiti artists Por el Ojo; photographs and slides of performances by the NEA 4: Jon Fleck, Karen Finley, Holly Hughes, and Tim Miller, as well as artist statements and press documentation outlining the subsequent withdrawal of their funding; video interviews with Jon Hendricks, the founding member of Guerilla Art Action Group, and Harley Spiller, Franklin Furnace’s long-time administrator and co-curator of “Hello! My Name is…Graffiti Stickers from the Buckman/Magnusson/Spiller Collection”; and a film by Yury Gitman of Joshua Kinberg’s arrest.
