Within this new body of work, Geary focuses on iconic imagery that appears as cartoon-like forms with psychedelic patterns and colors. He often uses the grooved and ridged surface pattern of the brain to depict the heads of his imaginary creatures. This realistically illustrated “grotesque” pattern stands out from his support of fanciful brightly colored space. Playful objects such as a hat, pipe or hands connect the flattened background with the brain-like images within his canvases. At the same time, black rain, red bread, skulls and the muscle texture of his creatures’ elongated arms evoke a darkly emotional presence to the work. With this creepy imagery, Geary suggests that these paintings are portraits of the subversive generation in contemporary society and that the flat background implies their subconscious.
