Photographer Steven Klein is known for his influential imagery in fashion, advertising and art. His work is unlike most photographers working in the same genres, for his images tend to impact the viewer with multiple meanings, or as Jean Genet would put it, as “signs charged with signs.”
His shoots with Madonna, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Justin Timberlake, Tom Ford and David Beckham have pushed the envelope in regards to what is considered “celebrity photography.” His subjects are willing to become other than themselves for him and at times venture into controversial regions. His highly charged imagery is found in such diverse places such as American Vogue, W Magazine, Italian and French Vogue, and on every cover of L’Uomo Vogue.
His work has been featured in major galleries and museums worldwide, such as his “Case Study#13” show at the Gagosian Gallery, LA in 2005, and the “X-STaTIC PRO=CeSS” installation at Deitch Projects, NY in 2003. This fall he will have exhibitions in Moscow, Tokyo, the Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade, the Museum of Contemporary Art Bucharest, the Salamanca (Spain) Contemporary Art Center, the Katonah Museum of Art in upstate New York and early next year he will be part of a group exhibition about Fashion and Portraiture at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Klein has also been written about in many fine art magazines such as Artforum and Art Review.
