From the late 1970s to the early 1980s, German artist and photographer Regina Schmeken worked extensively in France, Italy, and the United States.

Schmeken’s two oversized photographs of the Manhattan skyline were taken in 1981 when she was living in New York. The photographs already been exhibited at the Maximiliansforum in Munich, as well as at the Goethe-Institut New York in 2002.

Both works belong to a photo series entitled anonymous faces, which was part of the 1982 exhibition Gesichte (Visions) at the Munich Museum of Photography. In the same year, the photograph displaying a woman’s face juxtaposed with the skyline was awarded the International Photo Design Award by the German magazine Art.

This fall, the Goethe-Insitut New York has chosen to exhibit these captivating photos in order to commemorate the tragic events of September 11th.
