Variety was created to support contemporary artists who are actively working in various countries, such as China, Korea, Japan, US, and Europe. The seven participating artists express interesting, multicultural experiences depending on their individual concepts and content. The artworks by these seven artists (Ahn Chul Hyun, Cai Qing, Hawk Zhang, Kye Lee, Peter Dobill, Shen Wei, and Shige Moriya) show a unique diversity of experience through the use of Mixed Media Installation, Photography, Video Installation, and Performance Art.

Ahn Chul Hyun, born in Korea, has been working with new media for over ten years. He is interested in creating physical representations of conceptual space (infinite space and beyond), and provides an environment in which to contemplate the boundlessness of human beings ability for physical and spiritual experience. Basically, he creates an artificial and endless space through lights and mirrors. It becomes a minimal form and a strong visual for the viewer .

Cai Qing exhibited his works in various countries including Asia, US, and Europe. His performances have incorporated video and photography in order to make his documentations. Qing explains, “A special symbol was put into a new environment to generate a large contrast and to form an intense new meaning to inspire people to think. A new definition was given to “long March” in contemporary life. The conflict between revolution and capitalism; East and West will continue until a new global culture is established.”

Shige Moriya, Japanese born artist/curator/director, makes works, which seems to be interested in going back to nature. His video work explores what can happen when preconceived notions of social normalcy are dropped in favor of true creative freedom.

Hawk Zhang explains about his art, “Handcuffs made of money were used to tie up the people. When the thirst for money cannot be satisfied, one becomes a slave of money. Money means everything.”

Kye Lee’s concept of “annihilation” in conjunction with time, change, loss, and memory is the primary consideration for his art. His work depicts the mixture of a slight imagination of ‘change’ and the memory of past nostalgia. His work is a combination of digital imaging, drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, and vintage non-silver photo printing process.

New Zealand born artist Peter Dobill is a performance artist who engages in what can only be called tests of human endurance. Dobill documents these physical tests through highly produced video pieces, which he believes, are as important as the original performances.

Shen Wei is fascinated with exploring the complexity of “almost nakedness”, as it is expressed both emotionally and physically, not specifically but explicitly. Most importantly, he wants his viewers to make their own discoveries and judgments of the people in his work.”
