Emilio Sanchez’s distinct pictorial vocabulary is characterized by a fascination with the impact of light and shadow on structural forms and geometric volumes. As an avid traveler, Sanchez’s signature style was strongly determined by his explorations of Caribbean and Mediterranean architectural landscapes as well as those of New York City. Guided by the sun on architectural promenades, Sanchez stripped down the structures to their essential form to achieve an abstraction that happened by way of his selective vision.

Emilio Sanchez: Architectural Abstractions focuses on paintings and works on paper from the 1970s, a decade in which the artist’s abstract language achieved its most acute manifestation. The exhibition presents progressions of abstraction: from a studio view of the iconic New York City skyline to a radically simplified interpretation of a vernacular Moroccan streetscape. In these works, architectural elements become uplifting solitary forms against the backdrop of blue skies. They appear to exist in a timeless space of contemplation.
