Nine is the artist’s third one-person exhibition in New York and is accompanied by a fully illustrated publication with a fictional story by James Frey. The artist’s recent exhibitions include Inland Empire at Maureen Paley, London; and the museum group exhibitions Shoot the Family at the Cranbrook Art Museum, MI (traveling); and Remote Control at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia.

Nine is comprised of nine large-scale photographs that present a narrative of pregnancy, accentuating the inherent physicality, sensuality, and psychology of the subject matter. As in Marder’s past work, the photographs employ the artist as her own primary model and subject, along with her husband and mother. She depicts her pregnancy from beginning to end, veering away from a literal or prosaic document. Instead, Nine encapsulates a rite of passage, conveying the mixed bag of pleasures and fears that impending motherhood and marriage brings.
