Mr Roy continues to challenge the notion of what exactly a painting is with this installation. Next is a large, multi-pieced work, in which Styrofoam and other discarded materials have been glued to irregularly-shaped canvases, and covered in a dense immersion of paint through dripping, splashing, and pouring. Mr. Roy employs these devices intuitively as well as intellectually as he continues his exploration of organic growth and harmony through the use of what are normally considered synthetic and inert materials. In Next, the paintings appear to grow from the walls and floor of the gallery, and his opulent and fantastical forms converge on the center of the room, creating a lush environment of unmistakable beauty that defies any type of categorization. The effect is a sensation of a moment in time seemingly brought into being by accident or divine force.
