Curated by Joanna Lindenbaum, MA alumna of Art History from Hunter College and independent curator, Personal Geographies: Contemporary Artists Make Maps presents work that relates to charting or mapping in a personal, non-empirical manner. Traditionally, maps have created a sense of location, organization, and connection to others­-an opportunity for us to grasp where we might be in any given moment, as well as an assurance that we can pin down our world, that all is well and things are “in place.” Recently, artists have increasingly turned to the image of the map as a jumping-off point for a wide range of issues from racism to the “cult of the celebrity,” and from the status of women to the inefficacy of the spoken word. In our contemporary culture of GPS tracking systems, digital archives, and online encyclopedias, these map works question the increasing ability and subsequent need in society to define, organize, and pinpoint our world and our emotional selves within that world.
