In Room Project, Ryman addresses the architecture of the gallery’s project space, specifically three variations on the room’s corners. Ryman’s site-specific sculptures take the space’s volume, floor, wall and ceiling as tangible sources for exploring abstraction. Construction materials such as 2×4s are combined and painted to form structures that intersect and alter the room’s contours and planes. Reflected color and shadow create shifting relationships among subtly undulating forms, revealing a human aspect of postminimalist seriality. Processes of stacking and accumulation are evident in the large works as well as in small two-dimensional works interspersed between the corner pieces. Playful in their fabrication, the works are made of a wide range of industrial material such as plastic, Mylar, rivets and fluorescent paint in a myriad of geometric patterns.
