The works exhibited here reference nature and sexuality, but are also rooted in science and technology. The recurring hourglass-like shape used by Henderson is derived from the center of a torus, a doughnut-like geometric form.

Henderson has been instinctively drawn to this curvaceous shape, which can be interpreted as an intimate, in-between space, charged with male/female interchange. Henderson uses the lines described by the existing pieces to create a negative space that generates a vibrant absence. Henderson asks us to experience what’s not there as much as what is present. It is this dialogue between absence and presence that makes Henderson’s pieces dynamic, active and contemplative.

In nuclear physics, the torus plays a role in particle accelerators. For example, in the Superconducting Supercollider particles slam into one another at the speed of light producing subatomic particles, the building blocks of all matter. Henderson’s funnel-shaped sculptures look like the quiet inner core of these violent, uninhabitable spaces.
