Each of the works in the show are richly colored and dynamically painted on canvas or paper. Drawing from personal experience, mythology and the human condition, Sleurs depicts a range of animals at their most anthropomorphic to reveal often tragic and comic life-lessons. The foundation for these allegories lies in the expressive faces of the subjects and their quietly human characteristics. The signature curves of the brushwork fuse painterly gesture with representation. At times painting towards wildlife-portraiture, the basis of the work stems from the notion of hope and despair being a universal constant.
