Color and texture can be a thing of beauty in the animal kingdom… But this allure can be dangerous…
Ruth Marshall’s latest work translates the complex designs of nature into hand knit textiles. As accurate as humanly possible, Marshall’s pelts and skins document the color, pattern, size and feel of intensely studied animal subjects from the Bronx Zoo. The artist is so precise in cases that a single chosen stitch equates to an actual individual scale. Marshall strives to capture the beauty of an animal’s skin, record the significance of coloration and patterns in nature, and address the imposed and inherent symbolism in nature’s system of markings.
