Darren Almond began a series of clock-based sculptures in 2000, each exploring different ways in which we observe the passage of time. We will be exhibiting the latest work in this series, entitled Mono Chrono Pneumatic Red, a fully-functional flip clock measuring over 12 feet tall and nearly 25 feet wide, with each number controlled by exposed hydraulic mechanisms. The numbers of the clock are painted red, the main color of the Chinese flag, while the hydraulic pipes that power the movement of the clock are yellow, white, red, and blue, the colors of Tibetan prayer flags.

In an adjacent gallery will be Almond’s most recent film, a three-screen projection entitled In the Between. Darren Almond has made films throughout his career, and this one marks the completion of a group the artist began in 1995 that takes as its subject significant train lines. It focuses on the highest railway in the world, recently opened by the Chinese government to connect China and Tibet. The highest point of the railway is 5000 feet above sea level, where altitude sickness and oxygen deprivation are common. The artist followed the route of the railway, using a high-definition camera at different points along the route to capture the train speeding across the Tibetan Plateau that lies between the two countries. Images of the train line are interspersed with footage of Tibetan Buddhist monks, filmed in the Samye Monastery, in Lhasa.
