Memento Mori, curated by Mariko Tanaka, is the second annual benefit show of the:artist:network, featuring over 40 emerging new york and international artists brought together in an effort to raise money for the network’s gallery space and residency program. Memento Mori, the Latin phrase which can be freely translated to mean, “Remember you are mortal,” or “Remember thy death” The phrase used to name a genre of artistic creations, may vary in medium yet they all hold the same underlying truth to remind us of our own mortality. The upcoming exhibition is a compilation of artistic responses to the concept of Memento Mori as it exists in today’s shifting culture. To put forth an idea that could be open for interpretation, while at the same time rehabilitate the classical model.
