Self Forms assembles new photographs and drawings created by four young artists working in and around the conceptual terrain of identity. For the artists in this show engaging in the artistic project of knowing oneself cuts across a diverse set of interests, as the artists observe and manifest in their work interactions between the self and the various spheres (both imaginary and real) in which it is always already embedded. Indeed in some cases these interrogations bypass the surface of identity, questioning the very nature of knowledge itself. Blending images from the miraculous to the quotidian, each artist emerges from this terrain with difficult and decidedly different works; a heterogeneity that situates the works in an importantly complex contextual space. Held together, the works in Self Forms gesture towards a model of artistic practice fore-grounded in the power of difference, experimentation, and both conceptual and formal open-ness and ambiguity.
