For the past five years, Glynnis McDaris has been photographing fountains in various cities including New York, Dallas, London, Houston and Memphis. With Rising and Falling Forever, McDaris explores various fountain tropes such as youth, virility, baptism, sexuality and peace. While some fountains are zen-like and calm, others are explosive, ejaculatory, and even abject. McDaris elegantly captures an isolated moment of the potentially eternal flow, alive and wet. The recycling of water through these sculptures of stone and bronze, creates an Oroboros-like connectivity.
Each fountain has its own identity, yet together they dynamically interact as a cast of characters. The fountains transcend their aesthetic and symbolic roles to create a larger dialogue, presenting the multifaceted essence of the fountain.
