Informed by the vocabulary of abstract and minimal painting, Julian Lethbridge!s work draws on naturally occurring forms such as spider webs and thickets, while still maintaining a connection to the modernist grid. Continuing his characteristic exploration of surface, line, and texture, Lethbridge’s new paintings are infused with vibrant and rich color. Lethbridge’s approach is an additive one, beginning with a grooved and gestural base that is overlaid with subsequent applications of paint, creating a rich physical atmosphere. These paintings investigate the relationships between space and depth; absence and form; emotional improvisation and calculated gesture.
