Ati Maier’s dense and highly chromatic paintings draw on imagery culled from music, cartoons, the NASA website, science, and myriad other sources, all processed through her intense imagination. Even with all of these complex elements she is able to develop unified compositions in the works. “Ati Maier is a convincing pioneer of a new kind of ultra-mediated landscape painting and drawing—analog landscapes in a digital era of alternate realities and the Internet, virtuosic paintings chock full of information in a time of information overload.” (Volk, 2007)
This exhibition will include recent paintings on Maier’s trademark vellum-like paper as well as paintings on canvas where she has been able to introduce a more expansive scale to her work. Of these paintings Volk writes, “Her works are precise and exacting but also full of improvisation and subject to alarming turbulence. Obviously afoot with her vision, Ati Maier’s questing new paintings and drawings are among her best and most ambitious works yet.” (Volk, 2007)
