Plane Space is delighted to present One Thing About Music, an exhibition of new work by Jason Jägel.

Using compositions of color, shape, iconography and text, Jason Jägel structures informal pathways through narrative imagery. Image fragments and ambiguous or double-jointed signs offer a non-linear story with no fixed beginning, center or end. As with rhythm and musical arrangement, real feeling unfolds from the space between things where imagination ascends: the space where discord and harmony, illusionary space and flat abstraction are one. One Thing About Music includes large-scale gouaches, drawings on magazines / photos and will feature painting directly on the gallery walls layered with framed images and audio piped through headphones. Stemming from a book project that includes a 12” single by Los Angeles artist Madlib’s fictitious jazz quintet, this body of work makes reference to a parallel world that includes book readers, musicians, LP’s and record jackets. In addition, Jagel pays a music-inspired tribute to his late father, an accomplished painter who in the 60’s designed the LP covers for Ornette Coleman’s Ornette! and John Coltrane’s Olé, by addressing him directly and including paintings of his in the exhibition.
