Moving pictures got us through to September…
Blockbuster Summer is a presentation of film and video suited to the season. The Natural Life of Mermaids (2004) by the periodic collective Holiday Movies Initiative made up Nancy de Holl, Alice Könitz, Jennifer Sindon, and Isabell Spengler, finds the mythic sea-creatures in the unlikely locale of Lake Havasu, Arizona, a popular spring break destination. Lance Richbourg and Pete Broadrick’s feature-length silent super-8 film, The Cowboy Who Ate the World (1964) follows the adventures of an artist-turned-cowboy and expands the galloping gunfights of the Western to include gogo dancers and hot rods.
Kalup Linzy’s newest offering The Pursuit of Gay (Happyness) (2007), takes the summer to the city and back to the melodramatic 1940s for a short and sultry tale of the gayness going out of a relationship. Finally, Neptune’s loss is your gain in Alex Hubbard’s epic Coastal Salad Bars (2005) casts a loving eye on the seascapes and fishing boats of his native Oregon while turning in the performance of a lifetime with an unparalleled voice over extolling the delicacies of the sea in the briniest brogue. Visitors to the gallery will be able to select from a menu of these films, allowing everyone to play whatever, whenever in the air-conditioned and dark (with popcorn).
