New collaborative work by Agata Olek Oleksiak & Naomi White inspired by the paintings of Rene Magritte.

“The Liberator lives in a land where logic does not drive one mad.”

In the Liberator, photographic portraits, videos, and installations inspired by the subversive, absurdist paintings of Rene Magritte investigate the paradoxical notion that physical limitations can create a sense of emotional freedom. Artists Agata Olek Oleksiak and Naomi White manipulate motifs of bondage and liberty while obscuring gender and nationality to release the subject from the burden of identity.

White’s photographs are currently showing in the exhibition Eye Contact: Portraiture Now at GE World Headquarters in Fairfield, Connecticut through the end of September. Her video series Daily Practice is also screening at the Pioneer Theatre on June 5th as part of the Eye Am film series.

Olek’s Wearable Sculpture #7 will be featured in the premiere of Snail, a dance-sculpture work created collaboratively with choreographer Ariane Anthony at the Construction Company, 10 East 18th Street, #3, New York, NY, opening Saturday, June 10, 2007.

Olek also has an upcoming performance in June, 2007, with the dance artist Rachel Cohen at the XIV Annual International Contemporary Dance Conference and Performance Festival in Bytom, Poland.
