Dalit Gurevich’s first solo exhibit at Dam, Stuhltrager juxtaposed photos and video documenting her childhood growing up in a Kibbutz in Israel with paintings of memories. For her second exhibit, Gurevich continues to revisit and contextualize what she remembers from youth with physical remnants that have their own story to tell. Both an emotional and introspective exploration, Gurevich’s images of family are earnest portraits of how the artist carries loved ones with her.

Gurevich’s current exhibit consists of mixed media work based on photographs of her “Sabta”. (“Grandmother” in Hebrew.) Shortly before her death, Sabta insisted on her granddaughter photographing her, staging and directing each shot. Drawing on the now aged photographs as reference, Gurevich has created black and white acrylic portraits which she softens by adding knitted elements inspired by memories of her grandmother’s sweater. The dimensional quality of the knitted clothes worn by the flat images of her grandmother give a ghost like quality to the work. Empty clothes are filled with memory conjured by an image of one lost. The work is neither a memorial nor tribute but instead a glimpse into rare moments that are passed on from generation to generation.
