Join us on Friday June 29th as we kick off the Unannounced/Unexpected series. William Earl Kofmehl III and Jacob Feige will perform “Tell Pitiful Story” daily from June 29th to July 13th.

Tell Pitiful Story explores traveling as a perilous necessity, as with pioneers and hobos, and traveling as a search for authenticity, as with tourists. Taking a sensibility from 1930s hobo and carny culture, romanticized ideas of a life of travel in the United States are complicated by the safer, predefined travels of the international tourist. Two characters will inhabit the gallery space, working in a cement trough, eating beans from cans, and sleeping on a haystack when they are tired. In the course of the performance, sculptures will be created from materials on hand in the form of the show’s namesake, four triangles drawn in a row signifying the phrase “tell pitiful story” in the symbolic language of hobos. Slide projections will show family vacation images interspersed with fictional scenes documenting the lives of the two characters. A narration audible in the gallery will combine stories of ill-fated adventures and banal inconveniences from the artists’ actual travels with hobo adventures from the Great Depression.
