Maggie Suisman teaches at the Brooklyn Charter School in Bedford Stuyvesant. The portraits were inspired by her relationship with the children as a group, and as individuals. The twenty paintings speak to the uniqueness and humanity of each child, and, of course, Suisman’s own artistry and her ability to absorb, assimilate, and respond

“The varied use of flat color, framing each child’s face, is a reflection of the different individuals’ personality and mood,” says the artist.

SCHOOL PICTURES serves as a commentary on portraiture and the usual place it holds as an expression of privilege.”

Maggie Suisman’s work often revolves around social, political and environmental themes. Her series of posters about the factory farming system have been exhibited in shows from New York to Madrid. Her paintings are part of many private collections and her illustrations have appeared in The New York Times, Rochester City Paper, Isthmus Books Quarterly, 3×3 Student Awards Annual, Satya Magazine, Rabbid Rabbit Comics, and the 84th ART Directors Club Annual, in which she won a Merit Award.
