pluto proudly presents More Possible Moves than in Chess an exhibition featuring four Brooklyn-based artists. This is the second exhibition in which Pluto invites an established contemporary artist to guest curate a group exhibition.

More Possible Moves than in Chess, is organized by Brooklyn-based artist Rafael Vargas-Suarez a.k.a. Vargas-Suarez Universal. Vargas-Suarez’s selection salutes conceptual rigor, attention to craft and the shared influences of his own generation of artists working within process-based, layered image making. The never-ending, complex decisions artists choose to create with are the impetus for the title and selection of the drawings and paintings on view.

Pedro Barbeito is concerned with history and the fluid dynamics of paint to record it. His use of digital technologies, both as subject and process is exemplary of the direction painting is evolving in the 21st Century. Marsha Cottrell proposes challenging compositions of highly detailed mark making through computer- aided drawings. Her work references cyber-architecture, mathematics and artificial landscapes. Angela de Rosette paints meticulous, surrealistic portraits inspired by the natural and random distortions of underwater environments. Her process includes a refined, color mixing method reminiscent of Doppler radar. Daniel Zeller uses pen, paper and a personal language of finely varied organic abstraction components to create highly dense compositions. Known for an obsessive, Zen-like process, his drawings continue to map out imaginary territories unlike any other. All four artists employ or are influenced by contemporary visualization techniques brought forth by modernism, the inter-net and the history of art.
