School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “X & Y,” an exhibition of sculpture and paintings that use the grid as the primary structural element. Curated by Richard Brooks, assistant director of student galleries, the artists include recent MFA Fine Arts Department graduate Yoon Jee Nam and current MFA Fine Arts Department student Tina ManWarren Roche-Kelly.

Tina ManWarren Roche-Kelly uses common objects to create large-scale sculptures that comment on the rituals of everyday life. Born in a small upstate New York farming community, the artist employs skills learned from a family of builders, bakers and farmers. Roche-Kelly transforms materials such as paper clips and lunch bags into forms that strike a delicate balance between an organic, human touch and formal geometric rigor.

Using the grid as her basic element of construction, Yoon Jee Nam uses hand-drawn lines to give a personal presence to pure geometry. With references to Agnes Martin and Yayoi Kusama, Nam’s work navigates a territory between obsessive complexity and simple elegance.
