A recurrent theme in Henwood’s paintings and multi-media works has been the exploration of complex social and cultural issues. His recent series touches on the subject of fame and celebrity: Would you really want a complete stranger to know all about you? Have you considered the possible consequences?

There _for the grace of God presents black and white oil paintings of 60’s and 70’s actors who never made it in Hollywood, without portraying the immediate causes of their failure. Henwood’s choice to paint in black and white invokes the traditional headshot, while at the same time reflecting the general `grey’ mood. His meticulously executed paintings are imbued with a pervasive mood of alienation. Noble and lyrical, they capture a diaristic directness that provides warmth and glamour, richness and depth to desperate souls.

The series of portraits is accompanied by a large painting of the office of a talent agency, the image that completes the world where the youthful ambitions took place. Upon closer investigation, it becomes clear that there is something familiar about these actors.Somehow, they all have the appeal of “a star”. They all have the sme desire, betrayed only by a glimpse in their eyes. Their unfulfilled dreams show a sadness that betrays something in itself about success and what it may have brought. _ Was there a moment when they missed an audition or passed an _opportunity by that was staring them in the face? What were their dreams and how did they see themselves? How long did _they go on believing they were going to be famous? When did they let _their ambitions go? There for the grace of God “we” go._

Simon Henwood is a master of many media. Since he left Exeter College in 1986 with a degree in mixed arts, painting, animation and illustration, he’s had numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world and made various exclusive video projects for artists such as Roisin Murphy, Devendra Banhart, Imogen Heap and The Delays. As a painter, animator and filmmaker, Simon Henwood embraces all aspects of his art, infusing each project with originality and integrity.
