Black and White Gallery is pleased to present, “Compass: New Directions,” a site-specific group exhibition that features a series of nine multi-media installations by women artists who emphasize the architecturally organic subtext minherent within the Williamsburg space. As a raw construct, the gallery walls break up into a series of small enclaves, revealing a spontaneous, structural fluidity, which sprawls throughout the interior and further into the vast courtyard.

Together Lisa Cooperman, Carol Boram-Hays, Phyllis Ewen, Ann Ginsburgh Hofkin, Katherine Marmor, Yuki Nakamura, Katsura Okada, Crit Streed and Meg Walker collectively explore the elastic nature of geographical, physical and conceptual boundaries. As a multi-layered notion of locale begins to crystallize, these artists utilize abstraction to frame a visual dialogue that rotates boundaries and transforms the subjective object into an objective experience. “Compass: New Directions,” sidesteps figuration but serves as a metaphor of the complexity that underlies lived-experiences when combined with a shifting, geographical place.
