East Village / Lower East Side
September 9 - October 7, 2007
Reception: Sunday, September 9, 6 - 8 PM

From September 9th through October 7th Orchard presents “Form of a waterfall,” an installation by Sadie Benning of drawings with sound.

The exhibition’s title was inspired by the animated television show “The Wonder Twins,” in which a spoken command-beginning with “Form of…”-can transform the characters into anything. This fanciful logic of transformation underlies Benning’s approach to an interrogation of object-making, identity, and the politics that formed the context of her own work’s historical reception.

Hovering between abstract geometric studies and nearly erotic mandalas, Benning’s drawings represent a long-developing parallel to her celebrated videos. “Form of a waterfall” also includes an interactive selection of her “play/pause” audio works. These analog cut-ups, constructed between a cassette-playing boom-box and a turntable, have been pressed to vinyl for the installation. The Pixelvision video, “One Liner” ( 2003), also uses a play/pause-produced soundtrack and is an integral part of the installation.

Benning’s two-channel video installation “PLAY PAUSE” (2006) will be screened at Dia Art Foundation at 548 West 22nd St. on Sept. 13, 14, & 15.
