Apt that the first exhibition in the new Luxe Gallery location is entitled “All the Way”, a title which almost encompasses the optimism, breadth, dedication and wry playfulness of gallerist Stephan Stoyanov and his program. The works included in this exhibition by artists Ellen Harvey, Trine Lise Nedreaas, Pia Lindman, Amelie Chabannes, Nicole Cohen, Marie Maillard, Lisa Roy Sachs, Dominic Lejman, Pedro Lasch and Heather Bennett finish the job. While highly divergent, the commonality in these works is a kind of no holds barred philosophy. Whether in subject or methodology these artists embody force and focus, determination which does not run blind but is sheltered by awareness and purpose. Kamikaze production techniques, unpredictable participants, personal risk (corporeal as well as spiritual), content charged with the bulging boundaries of social constraint put these artists dead square in the midst of our struggle to stand up, stand out and grab a uniquely regnant role. Yet these artists are no bulls in the china shop; subtle actions, poetic manipulations and magnetic images seduce and glow. The viewer is lulled as recognition creeps into consciousness; recognition of a common desire to be seen for what they can see. Hinting at earnestness and idealism but allowing the tinge of corruption to bleed through at the edges, these artists utilize as well as critique our capacious wants met with unrelenting drive. So, “All the Way” is a little less Sinatra and a little more Etta James circa 1973, “All the way, all the way down, let it ride”.
