September 15 - October 13, 2007
Reception: Saturday, September 15, 6 - 8 PM
In their third solo show at Gavin Brown’s enterprise Oliver Payne and Nick Relph turn to the modernist design tradition and its contemporary social uses. Objects in this show are harvested from important works of twentieth-century furniture, sourced entirely from consumer reproduction retailers. Works by Charles and Ray Eames, Konstantin Grcic, and Giancarlo Piretti are retrofitted, reassembled, and displayed anew as bastard antiques of ambiguous origin and function.
Also on view is the film Swoon Soon (2006), recently included in the 2006 Tate Triennial. An animated parade of found images and digital marginalia, Swoon Soon revisits the artists’ persisting interest in youth culture and its floating signifiers.
