Paula Cooper at 465, Paula Cooper Gallery’s new exhibition space on West 23rd Street, is pleased to open its fall season with “Judge,” an exhibition of works by artist Wayne Gonzales and poet Vincent Katz based on their Charta/Libellum publication of the same title. “Judge” will open on 4 September and will remain on view through 22 September. A reception, reading and book signing will take place on 15 September from 6-8 at 465 West 23rd Street.

In 2005, during the Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Judge John Roberts, Katz wrote a long poem made entirely of text taken from The New York Times, highly edited and compressed, focusing on color words and details in order to get at emotions behind the facts as presented by the newspaper. Around 2002, Gonzales had similarly begun to work with images of the Bush administration and representations of patriotism in an attempt to record the emotional and psychological climate of the time. His source images were appropriated from the Internet, taken apart and reconstructed into graphic works that, while recognizable, have a haunting, ghostly quality. The book blends Katz’ texts with Gonzales’s images and graphic treatment of information to present a galvanized meditation on the current state of American politics.
