The Ryan Chelsea-Clinton Community Health Center and Haven Arts gallery announce the group exhibition “Sketch Detail” consisting of paintings, drawings, photographs, mixed-media, video, and architectural animation.
Guest curator Barry Kostrinsky, Director of Haven Arts in Mott Haven, the Bronx, conjoins “Sketch Detail” two seemingly contradictory terms to form a singular expression. “Sketch” is often far-reaching in concept but without concern for the filling-out of detail within the form. Conversely, “Detail” fleshes out the particulars, but does not present the overview that the sketch provides. The creative process for many artists involves an exploration of movement between the two. The works presented in “Sketch Detail” reflect a wide range of artists’ personal relationships to that balance of general and specific, gesture and control, as experienced in their personal creative processes.
Featured works will include Acconci Studios’ detailed sketch animation of a tubular, curling drawbridge to be built in Port de Boulonge, France. The video provides three synchronized views of the bridge as it uses seemingly organic motion and the recurrence relation of Fibonacci numbers to curl back on and within itself in order to allow a boat to pass through a canal.
David Nelson Gimbel is exhibiting two black and white photographs of dogs in dark urban landscapes. In one, a bright, nebulous dog moves into the frame from the upper left, creating and destroying a plane of darkness; in the other a silhouetted dog seems to pull away and out of a backdrop grid of concrete. In both images, though with far different emotional values, the harsh, loosely- shaped forms evoke the existential crises in Francis Bacon’s paintings of dogs.
Sketch Detail artists include: Vito Acconci, Jeffery Acea, Nathaniel Anspaugh, Dan Asher, Jaq Belcher, Matthew Burcaw, Matthew Chmielarczyk Linda Cunningham, Darcy Dahl, Ana de Portela, Marisol Diaz, Loren Ellis, Andy Golub, Edwin Gonzalez, David Nelson Gimbel, Norma Holt, Anne Humanfeld, Songyi Kim, Barry Kostrinsky, Serge J-F Levy, Bing Lee, Alejandro Lopez, Joseph & Donna McElroy, Sherry Mills, Laura Napier, Linda Obuchoska, Louis Pagan, Marcie Paper, Ami Plasse, Melody Provenzano, Kay Reese, J.C.
