Peer Gallery is pleased to present John Chervinsky’s “An Experiment in Perspective”, and Alison Carey’s “Organic Remains of a Former World.” These are the first solo exhibitions in New York for both Chervinsky and Carey.

Through the systematic science and the illusory persuasions of photography, artists Chervinsky and Carey both explore the often turbulent, yet ultimately inviolable relationship between science and belief, fact and illusion.

John Chervinsky, an engineer at Harvard University’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, makes references to the format of a classroom lecture – chalk on a blackboard – to gracefully illustrate concepts of physics, while using those concepts to create visual illusions. Using two blackboards at a 90ยบ angle for a stage, Chervinsky sets up various objects (magnets, chess boards, candles, clocks) as elements of open-ended narratives and surrounds them with carefully drawn notes and diagrams that appear to float in two-dimensional space. The results are elegant compositions that simultaneously inform and deceive.
